David Farrell is one of Scotland’s foremost broadcasters, currently hosting Heart Scotland’s drivetime radio show every weekday from 4 – 7pm and on TV, reporting for BBC Scotland.
With an impressive back catalogue including hosting BBC Scotland’s ‘The Edit, STV’s magazine show ‘Live At Five’, Edinburgh Festival coverage, appearances on Canadian TV and more. David has twice been awarded the coveted Sony Radio Award for his presenting skills both on the radio and at festivals such as T in the Park as well as an RTS Scotland Award.
This award will recognise examples of a business/organisation that has implemented flexible working for all levels of staff with the use of methods such as hybrid working, working from home/remote locations, flexible working days/weeks/hours or any other methods that are not ‘business as usual’.
This award will recognise a company or organisation (including charity organisations) that has demonstrated outstanding commitment and leadership to harnessing the benefits of a diverse workforce internally and externally. The winner will also commit to driving diversity and inclusion, shared responsibility across all levels of the organisation and best practice, a joined up approach aimed at embedding diversity & inclusion across the organisation and evidence of inspirational and measurable outcomes.
This award will recognise and celebrate businesses and organisations that provide further opportunities within their company for school or further education leavers. Entrants should provide evidence of how the programme assists apprentices and/or graduates in career growth, development and leadership with the opportunity to gain further qualifications in their chosen field. Entrants should also showcase the support on offer to individuals in the programme i.e. with dedicated mentors, details of training and development opportunities and examples of the opportunity to rotate around several business departments if applicable.
This category aims to shine a light on a business with extensive training and skills development opportunities available for its employees. Entrants should provide evidence of the training and skills development opportunities on offer and show how it is innovative, how impactful it is for the employees and the business and if there are any experiential offerings such as training via VR headsets, online learning, off-site training etc.
This award celebrates excellence and achievements in internal communications. The organisation will have a long-term commitment to high standards in internal communications. Judges are looking for evidence of how you have adapted your communications across a remote workforce, detailing how you encourage and ensure there is two-way communication and how you ensure the information that is important to your workforce reaches them effectively.
Having a strong, effective employee culture is key to running a successful business. Entrants should provide evidence of how they have encouraged and implemented an inspiring workplace culture for staff and demonstrate how this compliments business practices, experiences and results.
This award will recognise examples of the businesses approach to the staff culture, family support and employee working practices and policies. What was the initiative behind creating such a culture and how does it benefit the staff and business? What makes your practices and procedures of having a focus on health and wellbeing, mental health, home and work life balance and family/caring responsibilities unique from other organisations?

The winners of the Scottish Top Employer of the Year will demonstrate commitments to their staff and a range of their policies and practices such as staff culture, flexible working, family/caring support, diversity and inclusion practices and more that have had a positive impact on the business and its employees.
This award recognises organisations demonstrating outstanding internal advancement and establishing internal support systems. Evidence should be submitted to show how your organisation utilises the skills and experiences of the current workforce, promoting internal movement between teams where skills are best placed to improve outputs while showcasing the strategies and systems in place to continually review employee development opportunities.
Co-Founder and Director of Flexibility Works
Lisa Gallagher is Co-Founder and Director of Flexibility Works – a social business dedicated to supporting employers to create flexible workplaces in Scotland. She is one of Scotland’s leading experts in flexible working and is a media commentator and public speaker on the topic.
Lisa been the Director of third sector and private sector organisations including INSP- International Network of Street Papers and activpayroll. Lisa is also a Saltire Fellow for Entrepreneurship and has served on the boards of The Homeless World Cup, Impact Arts and the Network of International Development Organisations. She has three young boys who keep her busy.
Arnold Clark – Group Head of Employee Experience
Emma Glass, Group Head of Employee Experience at Arnold Clark, has over 20 years’ experience as an HR professional. Joining Arnold Clark as a Senior People Advisor in 2017, she progressed quickly into the role of Senior People Operations Manager, developing the People Team, driving innovative HR strategies and fostering workplace excellence. Emma has always focused on supporting employees, introducing new training and support plans to ensure they have the skills and resources to reach their full potential. She recently moved into the role of Group Head of Employee Experience, allowing her to implement some of these measures across the wider business.
Emma brings a wealth of experience from both the public and private sector, and she’s committed to championing best practices and creating supportive working environments.
She therefore looks forward to judging the Best Apprenticeship/Graduate Programme category and celebrating the organisations that aim to foster a positive dynamic in the workplace.
Owner and Director, Calgary Communications
Jennifer fell in love with branding as a child in the 1980’s and is a big believer in the power that brands can create. She has also always been fascinated by human behaviour and how we can influence decision making through clever communication.
A graduate in Business Organisation and Human Professional Communication Jennifer began her advertising and marketing career in media sales in Scotland, rising to run an advertising department, before leaving to build a start-up recruitment consultancy.
At this point she wanted greater experience in the agency and marketing businesses, so joined TMP Worldwide as an Account Director working across the full agency portfolio of private and public sector clients. These included the Scottish Government, Agencies and Bodies, RBS nationally, and Shetland Islands Council, to name a few. Her role at TMP was to manage a team of specialists in creative, digital and media to create effective and cost-efficient strategies to attract and retain the right talent across all skills sectors, and to work with and be the bridge between clients and the agency, involving strategic advice and tactical delivery. Latterly at TMP she ran the account management function in Scotland.
In early 2014 she left TMP and joined Calgary Communications as Co – Owner and Director. Her passion and energy for the industry has always been second to none and has been infectious with clients. This is clearly evidenced by the impressive client base that Calgary has. Now with over 24 years’ experience she has carved a personal reputation at the forefront of strategy, brand, culture and insight and track record of agility and innovation – locally, nationally, and internationally. She believes in a “Proven not Promised “approach.
Senior Employer Solutions Manager, CIPD
Vivien Struthers is an accomplished senior leader in people development and organisational change with over 20 years of global experience. She has successfully led transformational programs, built strategic partnerships, and driven sustainable performance across diverse industries. Currently, as a Senior Manager at CIPD, Vivien partners with HR, OD&D and L&D leaders to help elevate the capability, impact, and credibility of the People Profession. Her career spans senior roles in North America and EMEA specialising in leadership and talent development. With a strong commercial focus and deep operational experience, Vivien excels in client relationships, strategic thinking, and delivering impactful business results.

An expert panel of judges will be assembled to review all entries against the awards criteria. An official shortlist will then be announced via The Herald and heraldscotland.com and all finalists are invited to attend the awards ceremony.
The shortlist will be listed in The Herald and heraldscotland.com in September 2024
Winners will be announced at our live awards ceremony on Wednesday, October 30.
