The Herald is proud to launch their Student Press Awards for 2026 in association with Weber Shandwick. These awards recognise Scotland’s most talented student journalists, production staff and editors. All students studying at Scottish Higher or Further Education establishments are invited to submit work to our esteemed panel of judges headed by The Herald Editor, Catherine Salmond.

Winners of the News Writer of the Year, Features Writer of the Year, Sports Writer of the Year and Columnist of the Year categories each receive a week’s work experience with The Herald editorial team. The Student Journalist of the Year will also win the unique opportunity to join The Herald editorial team for a four-week paid internship during the summer of 2026. The Student Arts Writer of the Year is a new category for the 2026 awards and reflects our commitment to supporting the next generation of arts writers. The winner will be offered a six‑month (paid) freelance contract, mentorship from the Arts editorial team and a guaranteed place in The Herald’s Edinburgh festivals team.

Entries are now closed, stay tuned for the official finalist announcement!
