The Herald Digital Transformation Awards are back for a second year!

2020 saw businesses adapting quickly and without hesitation, which has helped the process of digital transformation across all sectors.

Although the covid pandemic has accelerated the process of digital transformation for many organisations, Scotland’s digital strategy has made it clear that this will continue to be a focus for many businesses.

The awards recognise and reward Scottish businesses from across all industries and sectors who are using digital technology in new and innovative ways. This can be to benefit the people they work with, grow their business, deliver successful digital marketing campaigns, or completely change the way they are working on a daily basis. We will also recognise those extraordinary individuals who are setting trends, showing passion and creativity, and making a significant contribution to their sector.

Best use of Technology in Healthcare Award

This category will recognise an organisation that has made exceptional use of digital technology to ensure or enhance healthcare. We are looking for an organisation that can demonstrate how this use of technology has benefitted their customers in the short-term but also the long-term.

Best use of Technology in Education Award

This award will be given to an organisation that has made exceptional use of digital technology to promote learning. This could be a school, higher education institution or group that has used technology in a creative and innovative way to ensure other people have access to education.

Best use of Technology in the Third Sector Award

This award will be presented to an organisation that is using digital technology to drive social good in Scotland and beyond. We will be looking for charities, voluntary organisations and social enterprises where innovative digital projects have resulted in real and meaningful engagement with the people they work with.

Digital Professional of the Year Award

This category will recognise the best digital, media or creative professional. The individual will demonstrate technical and creative expertise as well as commercial success for their team or business.

Digital Young Person of the Year Award – sponsored by Glasgow City Innovation District

This award will go to a young person, under the age of 25, who is showing passion and creativity with digital technology. We are looking for someone whose fantastic and innovative use of technology is contributing to their employer, expanding their own business or is putting them above and beyond in their education.

Digital Marketing Campaign Award

This award will be presented to an organisation that has run an exceptional and successful digital marketing campaign to raise awareness, increase revenue or promote a product or service. This can be through the use of social media, digital advertising and other means of viral communication.

Digital Community Award

This award will go to an individual, group or organisation who has used technology to help their local community. We will be looking for examples of how the use of this technology supported and brought the local community together.

Digital Diversity Award – sponsored by Be-IT

This category will award an organisation that has used digital technology to ensure diversity and inclusion. The organisation must demonstrate how the use of technology has made daily life for their employees or customers more accessible and promoted inclusion and diversity.

Business Growth Award – sponsored by DigitalBoost

This award will be given to an organisation that demonstrates the successful use of technology to grow their business. This can include growth in terms of revenue, staffing and customer base.

Innovative use of Technology Award

This category will recognise an organisation that is leading the way with new technologies. We are looking for an organisation who has adapted an existing, or implemented a new technology to overcome a specific issue that was apparent within the business. We will be looking for evidence of how this has, or will be able to, make a positive impact.

Digitally Transformed Business Award

This award will be given to a business that can demonstrate an exceptional progression in using digital technology in their daily practices. This could be an organisation from any sector or industry that can demonstrate how they are using technology in a new and innovative way, how it has benefitted staff and customers, and how it has contributed to the success of the business.

Please note, this award is not open for entry and will be decided by the judging panel based on submissions within other categories.

Judges

Ian graduated as a Bachelor of Accountancy from the University of Glasgow and worked for Ernst & Young before moving into journalism. He joined The Herald in 1995 and was appointed business editor in 2003. Ian is a seven-times category winner in the Scottish Press Awards, and has won various UK-wide awards, including Scoop of the Year in the Workworld Media Awards.

Michelle is a Service Development Manager within Digital Health and Care Innovation Centre and member of the Senior Management Team . Michelle leads on a portfolio of innovation iniatives and delivery of digital innovation projects on behalf of DHI. Most recently leading the SCOTCAP Project which introduced the use of PillCam Technologies to enable point of care diagnostic testing for Bowel Cancer and is now being scaled up across NHS Scotland.

Michelle identifies and develops innovation opportunities, supports knowledge transfer to optimise adoption, and plays a key role in supporting organisations to deliver at scale transformational service change underpinned by digital services

Before DHI, Michelle worked at the Scottish Centre for Telehealth and Telecare in NHS 24 working across Scotland with Health and Care strategic leads, senior stakeholders, academia, and the Scottish Government. She was a national strategic lead for Remote Health Monitoring portfolio funded by the Technology Enabled Care Programme in Scotland and has led a number of programme EU funded projects.

Michelle is a Clinical professional with knowledge , skills and experience in operational management, programme management, implementation, change management, service redesign and development of citizen-facing digital services. She is interested in the transformation potential of digital innovation has in enabling better health and care integration, person-centred care, and sustainable service delivery.

Highly respected and trusted leader, Alisdair is recognised as one of Scotland’s prominent professional advisers in Scotland’s digital and technology sector. Alisdair is currently leading the development and growth as Director of the Glasgow City Innovation District, Scotland’s first Innovation District and is a board adviser to several of Scotland’s leading, prominent Digital Product SME’s. Alisdair also founded Framewire, an advisory practice focused on mentoring the founders of Scotland’s leading digital technology businesses and is also recognised for his passion and dedication to developing the growth of Scotland’s Tech Ecosystem and its Tech Clusters.

Alisdair is the co-founder of the internationally acclaimed Turing Festival (now Turing Fest) and at the inaugural Scottish Tech Startup Awards was awarded the first Tech Ecosystem award which recognised his expertise and commitment to developing Scotland’s tech ecosystem and investment across the sector. Alisdair was a finalist in the Barclays Entrepreneur Awards and has been inducted into the BIMA 100 as one of the UK’s leading digital tech leaders. Alongside being a board member of BIMA in Scotland, Alisdair is a board member of digital tech companies Amiqus, Cut Media and VeryConnect. Alisdair is also a member of the ScotlandIS policy steering group, which provides strategic advice to the UK and Scottish Governments on developing Scotland’s tech sector and is a member of Johnston Carmichael’s Tech Advisory Board.

Christina Hall is Client Director within Be-IT Resourcing and Be-IT Projects and has been involved in the Scottish digital and technology markets since 2014.  Since starting within tech in Scotland all those years ago she has been lucky to have worked alongside some fantastic businesses and people working with anything from exciting start-ups and ambitious SMEs to large multinational businesses and corporate giants.

Christina joined Be-IT Resourcing in early 2017 and has taken great pride in contributing to the substantial IT growth they have been part of within a range of different industries.  Within her day to day working life she partners with fantastic clients to help them understand the wider market and how this impacts their own internal plans for growth and development to help match their ambition.  Since launching Be-IT Resourcing’s sister company Be-IT Projects in 2020 Christina’s role as Client Director has allowed her to play a critical part of large scale digital transformation projects by advising and supplying integral resource which has been essential to both delivery and success.

Neil Lowson is a Marketing and Digital Services Manager at Business Gateway. In his role he helps to promote the services offered to start-up and growth businesses throughout Scotland. Included in this is the promotion of DigitalBoost, one of the events sponsors, who look to upskill business owners across Scotland in digital transformation. Neil works closely with over 30 local offices who deliver the service on the ground, as well as playing a key role in digitising processes through Covid, particularly the daily webinar programme that moved from in-person events to online only in 2020.

Previously, Neil worked at award-winning  Scottish digital agency, Whitespace (now Dentsu Creative).  With over 5 years agency client services experience working on both public and private sector clients. Neil has delivered a variety of work for Scottish Government and public sector clients, including Food Standards Scotland and Social Security Scotland, as well as privately with clients including Hibernian FC and Whyte & Mackay. Neil is vastly experienced in the delivery of website projects, interactive tools as well as integrated campaigns.

Melinda Matthews-Clarkson has spent her 28-year career as a leader in technology. She is currently the CEO of CodeClan where she leverages her passion for people and her business skills to drive growth into the Scottish Digital Economy. She has held roles as a VP of Sales, Global Executive of Business Development & Enablement, Director of Marketing and VP of Alliances and Partnerships.

Melinda has a BS degree in Sales and Marketing Education; has certifications from UCLA Women in Leadership, Executive Coaching, and Mentoring from Edinburgh Coaching Academy, and has been recognised in the Top 100 Women in CRN Software Channel publication from 2014, 2015 and 2016. She has been nominated for many awards as the CEO of CodeClan including Inspiring Women in Tech and was recently named one of the Top 7 Women to watch in Scotland Tech.

She is a judge for Scottish Edge start ups, a cheerleader for Smart Works Charity that focuses on assisting women back into the workforce and on the Board for Scottish Apprenticeships Frameworks. She is the leader of CodeClan’s Digital Diversity which supports and inspires individuals to reach out and discuss social challenges that limit opportunity for women and diverse individuals to be the best they can be.

When she is not thinking about technology, she can be found in her garden, on her yoga mat or in the kitchen creating wonderful tasty dishes.

Toni is a Secondary School Computing Science teacher, the Founder of the multi-award-winning charity dressCode and Turing’sTesters, and also the Co-founder of the ada.scot festival.

The aim of dressCode is to help close the gender gap in Computing Science. dressCode have also launched Computing Science Scotland, a national initiative with the aim to help support Computing Science teachers and inspire as many pupils as possible to continue to study Computing Science.

Toni is extremely passionate about teaching Computing Science, and encouraging more pupils into the subject, particularly more girls. The work Toni has done to raise the profile and to support Computing Science as a subject at schools to inspire the next generation and to help close the gender gap has been recognised by a number of awards.

The Awards Ceremony

The Herald Digital Transformation Awards 2022 will take place on Thursday 25th August in Glasgow.
The evening includes an arrival drink, three course meal, half bottle of wine, entertainment and the awards presentation. There is also the fantastic opportunity to network with other attendees from across all industries in Scotland who are embracing digital transformation.

The event will be hosted by broadcaster and journalist, Catriona Shearer.

HOST

Catriona Shearer is a broadcaster, journalist and event host with over 16 years’ experience in the media.

Best known for presenting BBC Reporting Scotland, she’s racked up thousands of hours of live TV.

Away from the newsroom she’s helped ring in a few New Years on BBC’s Hogmanay Live programme, has hosted BBC wildlife show Midsummer Live from the Isle of May, presented live programmes from T in the Park music festival and Wimbledon and was host of BBC Scotland’s game show Wonderball.

A keen music and football fan, Catriona can be heard on BBC Scotland’s Off the Ball, Radio Clyde and Greatest Hits Radio.

Anyone can submit a nomination, but they must be based in Scotland.

Not only does being shortlisted for (or better yet, winning) an award present a fantastic opportunity to be recognised as a digital transformation trend-setter, it is also a major morale boost for you or your workforce and is a great PR opportunity both at the event and long after. If you win, you will also receive a trophy for your display cabinet!

You must complete our entry form to submit a nomination. Head to the ‘How to Enter’ section above for instructions.

You can submit as many nominations as you like across the different categories. The categories and the criteria for each can be found in the ‘Categories’ section above.

Please note that the overall Digitally Transformed Business award cannot be entered. The winner is selected by the judging panel based on the entries in other categories.

Once you have submitted an entry, we will add your nomination to the judging pack for consideration. Once the judging has taken place, we will contact you to let you know if your entry has been shortlisted or not.

All the entries we receive will be considered by our judging panel at the judging session in July. Please note that the shortlist and winners are decided solely by our panel and do not come down to a public vote or number of nominations received.

The shortlist will be listed in The Herald and on this website at the beginning of August.
