Best Apprenticeship/Graduate Programme

This award recognises and celebrates businesses and organisations that actively create opportunities for school leavers and further education graduates to develop and progress in their careers.

Entrants should provide evidence of how their programs support apprentices and/or graduates in career growth, skills development, and leadership progression. This may include:

  • Opportunities to gain further qualifications in their chosen field.
  • Structured support systems, such as dedicated mentors.
  • Comprehensive training and development initiatives.
  • The ability for participants to rotate across different departments to gain diverse experience.

Judges will be looking for clear examples of how these initiatives contribute to long-term career success and how the organisation fosters a supportive learning environment.

Best Training & Skills Development Initiative

This category highlights a business that prioritises employee training and skills development through extensive and innovative learning opportunities.

This award recognises businesses that have demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering a positive staff culture, supporting family needs, and implementing effective working practices and policies.

  • The impact of these practices on both employee well-being and overall business success.

Judges will be looking for businesses that excel in maintaining a people-centered approach, even as they expand, ensuring that the needs of their workforce continue to be met at every level.

Scottish Top Employer of the Year Sponsored by Trump Turnberry

The winner of the Scottish Top Employer of the Year award will demonstrate a strong commitment to their employees through a range of policies and practices that positively impact both the business and its workforce.

The judges will consider the following points when judging this category:

  • Their dedication to fostering a positive staff culture.
  • Implementation of flexible working options, including support for family and caring responsibilities.
  • Strong diversity and inclusion practices that promote equality and support all employees.
  • Other key policies and initiatives that have contributed to employee well-being, engagement, and overall business success.

Judges will be looking for businesses that go above and beyond to create a supportive, inclusive, and thriving workplace for all employees, resulting in measurable benefits to both staff and the organisation.

Sandra Innes

Senior Client Partner, Penna

Sandra’s career in advertising began as an Office Junior for Peter Menzies Advertising, in 1982. She rose through the ranks at Barkers Advertising, to Regional Director before Barkers was acquired by Penna in 2009. In 2011, Sandra joined TMP, leaving there in 2023 to return to Penna where she led the tender exercise to secure the Scottish Government Recruitment & PIN Advertising Framework contract – accessible to the entire public sector in Scotland. Sandra is responsible for client relationship building and providing strategic direction to the framework clients, with the objective being to position the public sector organisations as employers of choice, in what is an extremely competitive marketplace.

Verity Watson

Verity Watson

Assistant Director of Employee Experience, University of Strathclyde

Verity Watson is an HR professional and employment solicitor. She is the Assistant Director of Employee Experience at University of Strathclyde. She is also the Vice Chair of the Employment Lawyers Association’s In-House Committee, an employment law tutor, chair of school parent council and until July this year, a Board Member of Glasgow Colleges Regional Board. She has a background in the finance and legal sectors prior to joining the University and is a keen supporter of socially progressive initiatives in workplaces.

Jennifer Centola is a respected leader in employer branding and employee communications, with over 25 years of experience helping organisations define their voice, engage their people, and connect meaningfully with the talent that drives success. As Owner and Director of Calgary Communications, she brings strategic clarity, creative energy, and behavioural insight to every engagement.

Following a successful career in advertising, talent attraction, and a senior role at TMP Worldwide Jennifer co-founded Calgary Communications in 2014. Her work is grounded in a “Proven not Promised” philosophy, delivering authentic, insight-driven strategies that shape culture and elevate employee experience.

Lisa Gallagher is Co-Founder and Director of Flexibility Works – a social business dedicated to supporting employers to create flexible workplaces in Scotland. She is one of Scotland’s leading experts in flexible working and is a media commentator and public speaker on the topic.

Lisa been the Director of third sector and private sector organisations including INSP- International Network of Street Papers and activpayroll. Lisa is also a Saltire Fellow for Entrepreneurship and has served on the boards of The Homeless World Cup, Impact Arts and the Network of International Development Organisations. She has three young boys who keep her busy.

How does the judging process work?

An expert panel of judges will be assembled to review all entries against the awards criteria. An official shortlist will then be announced via The Herald and heraldscotland.com and all finalists are invited to attend the awards ceremony.

When will the shortlist be announced?

The shortlist will be listed in The Herald and heraldscotland.com in September 2025

When will the winners be announced?

Winners will be announced at our live awards ceremony on Wednesday, October 29.
