CELEBRATING community champions is “one of the best jobs”, says BBC Radio Scotland presenter Bryan Burnett, who will host the East Lothian Courier’s Community Champion Awards later this month.
The awards ceremony, which celebrates those who make East Lothian the best place to live, take place on Thursday, May 30, at the Corn Exchange in Haddington.
Mr Burnett, 59, said he was “delighted to be a part of the awards” and was looking forward to the evening.
He said: “These kinds of things are one of the best jobs because it gives you an opportunity to hear some fantastic news and learn about some great individuals and groups.
“The people who get the awards aren’t doing what they do to receive awards, but it is good to recognise them because they are such a big part of any community.
“I think us Scots are often not good at recognising great work. We just push on with the next thing.
“But I think it is always good to take a moment to reflect on a great achievement.”
Mr Burnett, from Aberdeen, said he was particularly looking forward to hearing from local heroes who had made a real impact in the East Lothian community.
He added: “Working for Radio Scotland, you hear often about big national stories.
“But the thing you often miss out on are those local good news stories that are having a big impact, but maybe not a national impact.
“Every community has local heroes and I know East Lothian will have plenty.
“I think something like this is just what we need right now in the current climate and I am sure it will be a great night.”
The radio presenter has hosted multiple similar awards, including the Dunfermline Press’ Community Champion Awards last year.
He said: “It’s always good to take part in these things. Everyone in the final is a community champion even if they don’t win, and it’s always a good night.
“It’s my job to keep it running to time and hopefully it will be a night to remember!”
The Community Champion Awards are generously sponsored by East Coast Buses; PureMalt; SSE Renewables Berwick Bank Wind Farm; and Sustainable Facilities Management.
