WHO will become the 57th Glasgow Times Scotswoman of the Year?

The closing date for entries is tomorrow – December 20 – so please send us your suggestions as soon as possible.

We want to hear who has impressed you over the last 12 months.

As nominations arrive thick and fast, we also want to know who should be crowned Young SWOTY 2019.

Our second award is open to girls and young women aged between 12 and 21 – tell us which young star of the year deserves to win the 2019 title.

Our celebration of Scotland’s remarkable women stretches all the way back to 1963, when women’s lib was picking up pace and workplace barriers were finally breaking down.

The ladies who attended the Gay Gordons restaurant to see unassuming Glasgow volunteer Bessie Johnston lift the first trophy, could not have known the landmark event would still be going strong almost six decades later.

Bessie, who worked tirelessly for the British Red Cross, the British Empire Cancer Campaign and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution among many others, was the first in a long line of ordinary women doing extraordinary things to be commemorated by the newspaper at a special, star-studded ceremony in the city.

Over the years, celebrity speakers have included HRH Princess Royal, who attended our silver jubilee; prime-minister-to-be Gordon Brown and telly boss Michael Grade. Scots personalities as diverse as Elaine C Smith, Karen Dunbar and Johnny Beattie have entertained the audience, while some of the country’s most successful performers, including Horse MacDonald, Darius and Nicola Benedetti have graced the stage.

Each winner has her own remarkable story to tell, whether she is a politician or a pioneer, a charity worker or a community champion, a mother, grandmother, sports star or businesswoman.

Who should join the ranks of our incredible former winners, following in the footsteps of last year’s inspirational champion, MND campaigner Lucy Lintott and Young SWOTY athlete Maria Lyle?
